📰 The Hyperlocal News to Know
Greenwich schools are facing a serious funding crisis, with a projected £7.32 million deficit in the Dedicated Schools Grant, largely driven by a £6.56 million overspend in the High Needs Block for SEND support. School reserves are shrinking, and 21 schools are expected to end the 2024–25 year in deficit, prompting concerns about potential cuts to educational programs, staff, and support for vulnerable students. A revised Deficit Recovery Plan now requires schools to closely analyse staffing and spending to help manage the shortfall.
Lewisham Council has appointed Hill to build 64 homes at Burnt Ash Hill in Lee Green, but only 23 will be for social rent despite a housing crisis. This follows a pattern of limited social housing on public land, like the delayed Besson Street project with no social homes. Facing rising costs, Lewisham is partnering more with private developers, though social housing remains a small share in new developments.
Residents of Kidbrooke flats were left without water for three days due to an unexplained issue, with Thames Water unable to provide a clear explanation. The incident affected a significant number of homes, causing inconvenience and concern among tenants.
