📰 The Hyperlocal News to Know
Lewisham Council has approved Landsec’s £1.5 billion plan to demolish and redevelop Lewisham Shopping Centre into 1,744 homes, a new mall, student housing, and public spaces, despite angry protests. Six councillors voted in favour after two critics were barred from voting for missing part of the meeting. Only 98 homes will be for social rent and 231 at discounted “affordable” rents—well below the borough’s 50 percent target. Campaigners and a rival developer called the scheme financially unviable and full of “false promises,” while Landsec argued it would deliver jobs, housing, and a revitalized town centre without displacing residents. Work will start near Boots, with completion expected over the next decade.
Royal Mail has warned residents in Lee to expect delivery delays on October 20 due to high levels of staff sickness and resourcing issues. The company said it would rotate deliveries to reduce disruption but admitted some areas may face temporary service gaps. Similar problems have affected postal offices in Ashington, Oxford, Prenton, Sunbury-on-Thames, Whitwood, and Kesh. Royal Mail apologised for the inconvenience, promised targeted support to affected offices, and said it would provide regular updates while working to restore normal service standards.
South-east London has become a hotspot for authentic Nepalese cuisine, thanks to its large Gurkha community, with standout spots stretching from Blackheath to Woolwich. The area’s beloved dish, momo dumplings, takes centre stage at places like Kailash Momo in Woolwich, where chilli chicken momo shines, and the Namaste On The Wheel food truck, serving juicy steamed versions in Beresford Square. Shristha Kitchen impresses with its spicy jhol momo, while Maya DD’s offers traditional Newari platters and sweet sel roti. Unexpected gems include Beresfords Fish & Chips, known for its fiery Nepali chow mein, and Gurkha Club in Plumstead, where the off-menu dyakula (mutton stew) and buffalo momo soup are local legends. Together, these spots showcase the rich, vibrant flavours that make Nepalese food one of London’s most exciting culinary discoveries.
