📰 News in your borough

LEWISHAM

NEW YOUNG MAYOR ELECTED
Lewisham has a new Young Mayor, and he’s taking charge with a £25,000 budget to spend on improving life for young people across the borough. Tyrese Gayle was elected by local students and has pledged to focus on expanding apprenticeships, strengthening youth services and creating safer, more welcoming spaces for young residents.

This is a really cool initiative that’s been running since 2004 that gives young people a direct voice in council decision-making, with real funding attached. The Young Mayor essentially acts as an ambassador for young people in Lewisham with a seat that can make a difference.

GREENWICH

GREENWICH PENINSULA PARK RUN BEGINS
Greenwich Peninsula parkrun officially launched this past Sunday with 441 participants taking part in its first 5km run along the Thames. They’ve got a really scenic route going past The O2 and the IFS Cloud Cable Car.

The event emphasizes physical and mental wellbeing through community engagement. It’s free and open to all and will be happening every Saturday morning. And there’s also a Junior Park Run every Sunday morning for 4-14 year olds.

SOUTHWARK

PLANS RECEIVED FOR A NEW 530-BED HOTEL
Plans have been put forward to transform two office buildings near Borough Market into a 17-storey hotel with 530 rooms, complete with a swimming pool, sky bar and terrace garden. Southwark’s planning committee will consider the proposal next week.

Developers say the scheme will include public ground-floor space for arts, food and community uses. BUT objections have been raised over its height, need and community impact.

That’s all for now. Have a great week!
